A solar inverter, pv inverter or solar converter is a type of electronic equipment that turns DC Electricity to AC Electricity. There are three types of residential solar inverters:

  1. String Inverter: These type of inverters will be installed next to your main electric box next to your meter. These inverters come in variety of sizes and capacities and they must be selected based on the panel type and the system size.
  2. Micro Inverter: These type of inverters will be installed on the back of the solar panel and turn the DC electricity to AC electricity at the solar panel level. These type of inverters are good for projects with mild shade on the mounting planes because Micro Inverters allow solar panels to work independent of each other. This means that if one panel is shaded for any reason, it will not affect the rest of the solar power system.
  3. String Inverter with Power Optimizer: There are two parts to these type of inverters, the string inverter box and the optimizer. Similar to micro inverters, the optimizers are installed at the back of each panel, but the optimizers do not turn DC electricity to AC electricity. Instead, they condition the DC electricity and send it to the string inverter to maximize the system efficiency. Moreover, the optimizers minimize the impact of shade on the panels by making them work independent of each other.
